- “What do I want? I want this suffering to end! I want... to live!”
- ―Metatron[src]
Metatron was an Argoan sorcerer with the ability to control dark magic, and the creator of the Seal of Metatron. After his physical death at the hands of Korin Zel-Dor, Metatron had his soul become one with the dark magic of the Seal to survive, leading to his corruption. Years later, Metatron anchored his soul to Heather Mason's soul during her birth, intending to one day drain her of her strength to rebuild his own body.
Shortly after Abigail-Ignotus' disappearance, Metatron mentally manipulated Heather as she grew weak from Metatron's growing strength, and soon revealed his intentions to her. However, Metatron's plan was soon thwarted when Heather made the ultimate sacrifice and destroyed her own soul to prevent Metatron's reconstruction and save her friend Lena Oxton, destroying what remained of Metatron in the process and preventing his return.
Background
Life on Argo
Creating the Seal
Metatron was a gifted Argoan who had mastery over dark magic, channeling his powers to forge the Seal of Metatron. However, Metatron and his fellow Argoans soon saw the dangers of having such a relic be active, so the Argoans hid the Seal away in a vault hidden in the planet's core, tasking Metatron with safeguarding it.[1]
Assaulted by the Order
In 1996, Metatron was confronted by Korin Zel-Dor and his followers known as the Order, who sought to acquire the Seal of Metatron for their plans. Metatron warned them of the relic's powers, especially in the hands of the inexperienced; Korin twisted his words however, using them to tell his followers that Metatron, an Argoan of power, couldn't trust the powerless to use his relic. Metatron tried to detest Korin's claim, though he was soon overwhelmed by Korin's followers and killed with his own relic after Korin retrieved it from the vault and used its powers on Metatron.[1]
Fall to Darkness
Survival
Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, Metatron had found a way to bypass his death by allowing his soul to become one with the dark magic of the Seal of Metatron. However, after years of exposure to the magic, Metatron's soul was eventually overwhelmed and corrupted by it.[1]
The Order's Plan
In 2015, Metatron, in spirit, watched as Korin and the Order prepared to birth a genetic clone of Kara In-Ze by combining a sample of her Argoan DNA with focused dark magic from the Seal. Metatron used the opportunity to transfer his soul to the soul of the clone as she took form through the dark magic, rooting himself deep within. The clone, Heather Mason, ultimately went on to defeat the Order four years later, while Metatron silently remained nested in her soul even after it was stripped of its dark magic by Korin, slowly but surely gnawing at her power to one day reconstruct a new physical form.[1]
Manipulating Heather
In May 2020, Metatron slowly started to siphon power from Heather's soul, causing her to experience nightmares and become increasingly ill over time. On May 11th, when Heather and her roommate Lena Oxton were walking to their first class, Metatron appeared before Heather as a dark silhouette; as he was only in Heather's soul, Lena could not see Metatron. Metatron drew Heather to a secluded area of the campus, where he introduced himself to her. Before he could continue, Lena caught up to Heather, which caused her to snap back to her senses and momentarily impede Metatron, who silently watched as Lena helped Heather get to the nurse's office.
Back at Heather and Lena's dorm, Metatron's shadowy silhouette manifested next to Heather as she laid in bed. Metatron's presence completely enthralled Heather as she continued to fall ill from Metatron's actions within her soul while Lena remained unaware of what was happening in the other room. With Heather in a mentally docile state and thus more submissive to his power, Metatron told her that he would provide her all the answers she wanted "in the flesh," instructing her to meet him at a location of her choice. Heather selected an abandoned house near the campus, and Metatron agreed to meet her there after nightfall before disappearing.[1]
Intentions Revealed
That night, Heather snuck out of the campus and arrived at the abandoned house, profusely calling out Metatron's name in anguish as she continued to become weaker and weaker. Metatron then appeared before Heather, commenting that she remained quite strong for a clone on the brink of complete collapse. When questioned by Heather on what he meant, Metatron revealed the circumstances of how he came to end up in Heather's soul and what he truly wanted from her; to siphon her soul's energy and transfer it into his own, which would eventually kill her while allowing Metatron to rebuild a new physical form for himself in the real world using his magic.
Powerless to do anything, Heather's physical form began to slowly destabilize as Metatron began generating his new physical form in the real world. This allowed Lena, who had quietly trailed Heather to her destination, to finally see Metatron for the first time. Upon seeing Metatron and realizing what he was doing, Lena called out for Heather to remain strong, catching both Heather and Metatron's attention. With Metatron momentarily distracted by Lena, Heather made use of the opportunity to fire a beam of heat vision at the sorcerer. However, Metatron quickly avoided the attack.
Heather's missed attack would strike the side of the room, triggering a fire that began to spread around the whole house. Heather ordered Lena to flee, though she refused as Metatron then approached her. As his physical form continued to manifest, Metatron remarked to Lena that she should've fled when she had the chance, saying that there was nothing that she could possibly do to stop him from completely draining Heather's soul. Metatron prepared to attack Lena with his magic, but just before he could cast his attack, he felt a sudden sharp pain that momentarily caused him to freeze up.
Metatron turned to face Heather, and was horrified to see that she had used her powers to remove her own soul from her body. Shocked, Metatron asked Heather if she really would go to such lengths, which Heather affirmed that she would in order to protect her friends. Heather proceeded to destroy her soul, destroying Metatron's in the process. Metatron howled in anger as his own physical form began to fall apart, as without Heather's soul to completely supplement his own soul with enough power, he could not maintain his incomplete form. With that, Metatron disappeared in a flurry of darkness, finally killing him for good.[1]
Personality
Metatron was once a highly-regarded and respected member of the Argoan community. In spite of his usage of dark magic, he harbored no ill-intentions with it and only sought to use it to benefit the Argoan race. When he realized just how powerful his dark magic could be after forging the Seal of Metatron, Metatron willingly agreed with the other Argoans that it would be best if his Seal never saw usage and promptly secured it in a remote vault, offering to protect it himself. Metatron warned the Order who sought to obtain the Seal that its power was too dangerous for anyone to handle in the long run, including himself. Metatron's advice however would be twisted by Korin and used as an excuse to kill the sorcerer.
While being overwhelmed by the power of the Seal unleashed by Korin, Metatron made a hasty and irrational decision before he could be entirely destroyed to allow his soul to become one with the dark magic channeled by the Seal. Though his actions did save him from annihilation, Metatron had now unwittingly plunged his soul into the dark magic's raw power, causing it to be tainted by its corruptive nature. For the next two decades, Metatron's will was utterly consumed and tormented by the effects of the corruption as his soul remained entangled in the magic's embrace, driving him mad to the point where he would do anything to escape his suffering at any cost.
To that end, Metatron sought to drain Heather Mason of her strength after he managed to root what remained of his soul within her own, showing no care for what became of Heather afterward. As a shadowy figure in Heather's mind, Metatron appeared calm and polite, using this seemingly normal state as a cover as his mental powers continued to enthrall Heather into succumbing to his power at a fast rate.
