Second Chance is the sixth saga of the Roach Chronicles.
Story
Outpost
Several months following the events of Purge, Roach, O'Ryan, Chris and TJ form their own organization called Umbra Ops, a private military company that operates around the globe. In November of 2035, Umbra Ops receives a distress signal from a research base in Northern Canada, saying that are being overrun by the zombies. Umbra Ops ask to identify the caller, who revealed themselves to be Doctor Jonathan Smith, leader of Group 492, a research organization with ties to the notorious Unit 14 before they went mad. Roach, knowing they need information of Unit 14, says they will attempt a search and rescue, telling Smith to stay put.
In the next three hours, Umbra Ops arrive at the site of the Group 492 outpost near the peak of a mountain on Meighan Island, located remotely in Northern Canada. They discover the entire facility has been overrun by the zombies, with hopes of there being survivors being very slim. However, they hear Smith taking to the group over the intercom, saying he doesn't have enough time before they arrive. The team then begins their search and rescue for Smith as they begin to engage the undead hordes.
During their searches, they discover several audio logs between Smith and the mysterious leader of Unit 14, with Smith questioning the Unit 14 leader if they were responsible for the destruction of every nuclear reactor around the world. The Unit 14 leader merely chuckles, saying that if they knew what was best for them, they'd better not disclose any information regarding their joint operations in the development of weapons of mass destruction. Smith questions on why he would, before hearing a zombie in the background. The leader of Unit 14 then laughs, telling Smith he will see him in hell as the audio log cuts out.
After a long search, the group discovers Smith in his office, where he was holding a Desert Eagle and aiming towards the door. After telling Smith to stand down, Smith then holsters his weapon, saying he knew they'd find him. Roach then calls in an extraction as they then hold down their marked LZ. After holding out against the zombie hordes, their extraction arrives, where the team, including Smith are then extracted from the site.
Following the operation, Roach questions Smith on Group 492's involvement with the work of Unit 14. Smith explained that Unit 14 discovered their operations thanks to a Unit 14 mole within the research organization, forcing them to work with them after seeing their potential. While initially refusing, Unit 14 captured one of Group 492's best scientists and locked him away in a gulag, saying he will die if they refuse to comply. After complying, Unit 14 forced Group 492 to create dirty bombs of Element X, eventually shipping them out around the world. Roach asks where the gulag is located, with Smith saying it was on an island just off the coast of India. However, the island was heavily guarded, saying that it would be near impossible to invade without a distraction. Smith then reveals the location of a Unit 14 oil rig located near the base, saying by attacking the platform would create a perfect diversion, causing Unit 14 to send forces to investigate. Roach then tells the others to ready up, saying they're heading for the platform.
Platform
Two days after the rescue of Doctor Jonathan Smith from the overrun Group 492 base on Meighan Island, Smith reveals the location of a Unit 14 oil platform, where the team can create a diversion in order to lure most of the Unit 14 forces guarding Rajgad Gulag away. In the next three hours around noon, Roach's team, along with the support of the US Navy, were sent to lead the strike. After beginning their assault on the platform, Roach realizes the site is one of Unit 14's relay stations, saying it was how Unit 14 was able to communicate around the world to each other by using a specially designed closed channel only Unit 14 relays stations could pick up. Roach orders the Navy to cease fire as they board the oil rig in hopes of discovering the locations of other relay stations, some Smith may not even know of. After seeing their attack released several zombie test subjects from the depths of the platform, the team is forced to fight off the infected once again.
After managing to work their way to the barracks in the underwater area, they discover an access code on a piece of scrap paper left by a worker prior to the outbreak. After reaching the missile silo, Roach inserts the code, opening another door leading into the mineshaft. There, they discover all kinds of equipment needed to make an operating radio system, as well as a world map with the locations of other relay stations, the closest being in Myanmar. With the necessary intel, Roach orders the Navy to destroy the site upon their extraction. However, the last part of Roach's sentence gets cut off by a radio jammer, causing the Navy to open fire on the site immediately. The four then rush out of the collapsing platform, eventually reaching the top level, where they jump onto their chopper just as the platform then sank into the bottom of the ocean.
Rajgad
Two hours after the destruction of the Unit 14 oil platform, Umbra Ops, along with a squadron of USAF helicopters, fly towards Rajgad Gulag in helicopters. Roach informs the team that the mission is to deal with any threat at the gulag and secure a captured Group 492 scientist with critical information on Unit 14, which Smith had mentioned back at the Group 492 outpost. With the assistance of the air force, they manage to knock out the air defenses guarding the gulag. Roach's team then lands in the gulag, where their chopper is soon destroyed by a mortar. After killing the mortar with a shot to the head, they soon realize he was the only one guarding the gulag, as it was completely deserted after. As they begin to search the area, they encounter zombies as they begin to pour out of the cave system.
The four then begins to engage the zombies, where Smith contacts them via a radio after they manage to restore power to the gulag. He tells the four that the scientist their looking for is being held at the lowest point of the gulag, and a special security access code is needed to open the door to reach the scientist. The four searches the entire prison, eventually discovering the access code was tossed away into one of the empty prison cells. Inserting the code into a hatch, they are confronted by the Group 492 scientist. Asking for an explanation of the mess, the scientist explained to the four that the workers at the gulag were mining Element X samples from the caves, eventually infecting several guards and prisoners after a leak. The four then escorts the scientist to the surface, where they call for an extraction. Smith tells them they have to wait five minutes before their chopper would arrive. Manning the mortar near the top level of the prison, the four hold out against the undead until their extraction arrives, where they are extracted from the site as it is then destroyed by the air force.
Relay
Following the successful extraction of the Group 492 scientist from the overrun Rajgad Gulag, four SEAL Team Five operatives, including Smith, are sent in to investigate a Unit 14 relay station, which was recently overrun by zombies. Questioning why the place was so important, Smith reveals that the site was the last known location of the Unit 14 Leader.
Five hours after the raid of Rajgad Gulag, the five are inserted to the overrun relay station, where they fight the undead. There, they are contacted by the Unit 14 Leader over the intercom, who says they will not leave the relay station alive. Smith says that he has loose ends to tie up with him, with the leader simply laughing, saying he can try to kill him, but he says "they both know the outcome."
After clearing much of the facility and hacking into the facility's power grid, the group manages to unlock a generator room at the west end of the facility, containing a water-powered generator connected to a waterfall below and a terminal. As Smith accesses the terminal, the room locks down, trapping the five in the room. The Unit 14 Leader then comes on the intercom, saying that it was time to end this, laughing maniacally as several explosions across the facility are then heard. A C4 then detonates in the room, killing three of the four agents and knocking Smith and the other down the side of the mountain. As the two began to get up, a Unit 14 helicopter with a spotlight then spots the two. As the operative opens fire on the chopper, the helicopter opens fire, killing the operative. Helpless, Smith watches as the chopper lands in front of him as a figure exits, walking up to him with a .44 Magnum. As lightning strikes in the background, the Unit 14 Leader is revealed. Before being executed by the leader, Smith remarks that he wouldn't be able to go far now, as Umbra Ops were now able to identify him through facial recognition, pointing to his helmet cam broadcasting the feed live. The leader chuckles, inviting Umbra Ops to try and kill him before executing Smith.
Finis
Following the disastrous, yet successful, mission at the Unit 14 relay station at the Arakan Range, Umbra Ops manage to use Doctor Smith's helmet cam to identify and locate the Unit 14 Leader's location at Dubai through facial recognition software, where he was setting up a brand new headquarters with Unit 14 within the city. Learning that the headquarters was also where Unit 14 has stored their most deadliest creations, the team prepares for the worst.
Assaulting the building with a small military force, the team is inserted through the lobby of the building, where their suspicions are confirmed; Unit 14 was throwing everything they had at them, including their zombies. Fighting through the building, they are contacted by the leader through the building's intercom system, telling the group that they will not succeed in their mission, saying he will be extracted from the site within moments. However, TJ manages to use a Black Hat PDA to hack into the building's security systems, locating the leader near the roof.
Fighting to the roof, the four then confront the leader and some of his men on the roof. After a brutal struggle, Chris is able to shoot the leader in the shoulder, wounding him. The leader then stumbles off the roof, but is caught by Roach. Roach then offers to spare the man, but he refuses, instead punching Roach with his other hand, causing him to lose his grip and sending the leader pummeling to his death.
With the leader's death, Unit 14 was disbanded, and all of their work was eradicated. Unknown to them all, their work still lingered on; within a place that was sealed off from the rest of reality. However, it wouldn't remain like that for much longer...
